Zen Master Dogen said that meditation is the gateway to repose and bliss. Meditation is relaxing into our true nature of mind which is naturally spontanious and free. This doesn't mean that meditation is always pleasant, but this unpleasantness is another cloud in the meditational sky. Things come and go arise and pass away. As the diamond sutra says: "So you should view all of the fleeting worlds: (in meditation, ideas, thoughts, emotions, etc.) a star at dawn, a bubble in the stream; a flash of lightning in a summer cloud; a flickering lamp, a phantom and a dream." Or Master Tilopa said: "Let go of what has passed. Let go of what may come. Let go of what is happening now. Don't try to figure anything out. Don't try to make anything happen. Relax, Right now, and rest." Meet whatever arrises in the mind and body with equanimity. This, to me, is meditation.
